Well, if Hammerfest is all about finding your next favourite band then 2012 will long be remembered as CackBlabbath’s first encounter with American Metallers Diamond Plate, who had the not inconsiderable task of opening the main stage on the Friday night.
Diamond Plate are yet another top-notch thrash band on Earache Records roster. They supported Anthrax on their UK tour, hence their availability to play here tonight. The band have been around since 2004 and they were flying the flag for the New Blood of American thrash metal on the main stage.
These guys are very much a band straight out of the old school (whatever that was), and since they emerged from the Chicago suburbs they have become a big name in the resurgent US thrash scene and it’s brilliant to finally see them start to make waves over this side of the pond too.
It’s always nice to see a band who are genuinely having a great time on stage, and judging by the massive smile on the face of frontman Jon Macak he was as impressed by the reaction the band were getting as we all were with them. Their riff-heavy thrash metal was just exactly what Hammerfest IV needed to kick things up a gear, and as the band played through their all too short set the venue continued to fill up as they drew in a whole load of new friends.
On the strength of this assured, engaging performance Diamond Plate are headed for big things, and should Testament ever decide to call it a day we may just have seen the UK waking up to their heir apparent.
Come back soon guys…
