The Royalty : Lovers

The Royalty are a band from El Paso, Texas, and they released this album on 7th May on Victory Records. For those of you that are familiar with the Victory label… then forget everything as this album is a zillion miles away from the usual stuff found there.

What this album actually is, is something of a mystery. It’s a great album though, steeped in soul. It has a nostalgic sound, and some very strong vocal work. There’s almost a sixties/seventies vibe to it, and in parts it reminds me of some of Blondie’s  earlier material. In other places, there are hints of Duffy, The Cranberries, The Primitives, The Cardigans and even Amy Winehouse. The sound I guess though, is primarily Indie (possibly), but there’s a lot more to it than that.

It’s a very ‘feel good’ album, with a light hearted sound. It’s very summery, and would be ideally suited to cruising in your car with the windows down (or the roof if you have a soft top). That said, it’s equally great to stick on after a tough day as it will soothe the soul and wash away your troubles. You know, let you take some time out of your busy life to stop and just listen.

To me though, this album is a breath of pure clean air or a sip from a cold mountain stream when you’re really thirsty. It’s extremely refreshing is what I’m trying to say. Possibly more refreshing than a Coors beer… It’s funky, groovy, and far out (yeah baby), without being to trippy and psychedelic. The vocalist has a very unique sound, and musically I can’t fault it at all.

It’s just very different, and being different is pretty much always a good thing.

This is well worth checking out, especially if you’re looking for something a little quirky. To be perfectly honest, this is not an album I would necessarily have gone out and bought myself. It’s completely different to the kind of music I normally listen to. After one play through, I’m thoroughly converted though, and I’m glad I gave it a chance. Give it a listen, as I’m sure you’ll feel the same way. Look out for The Royalty as I expect they’ll be invading UK shores VERY soon….
