BOA2012 Preview : Interview with Infernal Tenebra

Bloodstock is always a veritable melting pot of international Heavy Metal. One of the “new” bands we are most looking forward to catching are Croatia’s Infernal Tenebra. For the next in our preview interview series, we spoke to the band about their upcoming Festival appearance, and also found out about the thriving Croatian scene.

Let’s start at the beginning…can you fill me in on a little of the band’s history ?

Infernal Tenebra formed in 1999 in Istria, Croatia. Originating with pure black metal and adding a death metal foundation in the following years. With two DIY albums “Beneath the Twilight” (2001) and “The Essence of Chaos” (2007), the band withstood the test of time in the realms of the metal underground. After opening for Exodus at MetalMania Open Air 2008, the band focused on a new chapter of its journey, to emerge from the undergorund and present itself to the world. The upcoming album “New Formed Revelations” produced by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios, Sweden (Kreator, Amon Amarth, Katatonia, Paradise Lost) will be released worldwide by Massacre Records on December 7th, 2012.

For the uninitiated, how would you describe Infernal Tenebra’s sound ?

Combine Death’s intricate rhythms with Hypocrisy’s epic choruses, add rock solid rhythms, dynamic and technical solos, growling vocals that sing growl and modernize everything just to the point it still sounds true and not trendy – Infernal Tenebra is our vision of prog/melodic death metal for the 21st century.

And if you had to pick just one, what’s been the band’s highlight so far ?

Playing first stage at Metalfest 2012, sharing stage with Kreator, Hypocrisy and Vader.

How is the Metal scene in Croatia, is there a thriving underground ?

Metal scene in Croatia is packed with solid bands covering all metal genres, but lacking enough support to establish itself on the European metal map. The crowd is crazy though and a lot of vising bands are thrilled by the response they get when playing shows in Croatia.

You’ve been announced for the UK’s Bloodstock Festival, how did that come about ?

It’s a groundbreaking year for the band; after completion of the upcoming album production we have signed a worldwide deal with one of the premiere metal labels in existence today, Germany’s Massacre Records and it opened up a lot of opportunities for us. As a result, we got the invitation to play Bloodstock.

Were you familiar with Bloodstock before you got your place on the bill ?

Of course, Bloodstock Open Air is very well known in Croatia. As Croatia until recently didn’t have any domestic festivals to attend, foreign festivals were our only choice and a lot of festivals are well known and attended.

How does it feel to be appearing alongside bands like Testament, Machine Head and Behemoth ?

It’s a dream come true… these are all bands we grew up with. It’s an honor to us.

What other bands playing over the weekend are you looking forward to seeing ?

The lineup is fantastic; there’s so many great bands. I’m surely not gonna miss one of my all times favorite Paradise Lost. Evile is great. I’ll also check out our label mates Re-armed, our Croatian friends Rising Dream and Father and Slovenian band Noctiferia.

Bloodstock always has an international lineup, are you looking forward to showing the UK audience what Croatia’s metal scene has to offer ?

We’re extremely excited and can’t wait to play Bloodstock. It’s an opportunity to show the world what we’re about. Looking forward to meet all the fans out there, have fun and enjoy this great event.
