A Fucking Elephant : Seven Inches

A Fucking Elephant; what a great name for a band! Unfortunately it’s also a name that will guarantee that you’re never going to sell a million records. There aren’t that many bands about today who have sold a million records and are any good though is there? A Fucking Elephant, or less controversially, AF Elephant are bloody good though, better than Nickleback anyway.

‘Seven Inches’ sees the band return after a year off with two brand new tracks, just enough to fill a seven-inch record. There’s probably a double meaning in the E.P. name when you consider the song titles. ‘I’m addicted to Drugs & Sex and I want you to I want you to choke me’ and ‘A bunch of good looking Roundeyes’…yep, there not too be taken too seriously.

AF Elephant are just a duo; they do make a serious old racket though. Matt plays the “Diddly Diddly Doo” and Greg plays the “Whapata”, which I presume means they are made up of guitar and drums. As is often the case with duos, AF Elephant make up for their lack of members by cramming in as much as they possibly can with what they do have. The results are pretty satisfying and pretty ridiculous too.

‘Seven Inches’ may clock in at well under ten minutes, but there’s enough mayhem in these two songs to fill an album. Experimental metal with a definite nod to the instrumental stoner scene, but sounding both punky and post-metal at the same time…the sound of ‘Seven Inches’ is hard to pin-point. I suppose the experimental gives that away though!

A lot of ground is covered in these few minutes and anyone who wants more than the plod of the mainstream should be thrilled to hear this band.
