Damnation Festival Preview : Rob’s Top Picks

damn-2016Blimey, it’s time for Damnation Festival all over again and as usual there’s a stella line-up on offer.

Renowned for putting on the bands that the other festivals overlook or hide away on their fifth stage at 11 o’clock in the morning, Damnation have once again pulled out some real crackers. Some we’re more than familiar with, some we’ve been waiting to see for a while and there’s a couple that we’ve never really got to know very well at all. Up to now, of course.

Throw in the reasonable prices, great atmosphere and unique labyrinth of corridors to get lost in during the festival and we’re getting excited for this latest instalment.

This year we have a four-fold in the headline department with Abbath, Enslaved, Cult Of Luna and Electric Wizard are all up there at the top of the festival poster. It’s still not exactly clear how that will work but if I had to pick one from those four… it would have to be Electric Wizard.

A couple of years back we saw Electric Wizard all over the place, from Hellfest to Sonisphere and a couple of other shows to boot. We’ve not seen them live for at least a year now (shock horror) and we’re hungry for more.

Trudging back through Damnation history, I think Electric Wizard is my favourite Damnation headline set of them all, so it sets the standard high for this return. But I’m sure they’ll nail it!

Before I had kids and a mortgage I used to collect stoner music posters. Monster Magnet, QOTSA, Kyuss… loads of ‘em. One of my favourite designers was the Malleus Rock Art Lab. Through that I realised there was also a band coming out of that same lab and Ufomammut instantly clicked with me.

A low end to rival Electric Wizard is gonna get the place buzzin’.

Now, confession time… I’ve never managed to see Ufomammut live as yet. Looks like that may well change this November; wicked!

Speaking of posters and merch. Damnation has a great merch area. The bands on display are often off the beaten track so you get to pick up some real rarities and generally lots of t-shirts with skulls on them. Winner!

Right.  I have become a little obsessed with Conjurer this year.

6 Conjurer BOAAfter seeing them live at Uprising Festival this June, and then Bloodstock in August, I reckon November is too long to wait. A massive assault of sludgy doom all deliver with a smile… yeah right >>>

We spoke to Andy from the band in anticipation of the festival and Conjurer are pretty excited too…

And finally, for my last pick: Well that’s got to be Black Tusk!

I bloody love Black Tusk. Ever since the promo of ‘Taste The Sin’ arrived from Relapse Records covered in Mr Baizley’s mega artwork (another of my favourite artists) I’ve been hooked. I had a real fear that after their tragic events where Athon left us that the band would fold but they seem to be charging onwards.

That’s good! I’ll be down the front… see you there!

Without mentioning the whole line-up, honorable mentions have to go to Hang The Bastard and Venom Prison.

Hang The Bastard will play their last ever show at Damnation after ten years trudging around the circuit. ‘Sex in the Seventh Circle’ completely blew us away, so it’s sad to see them go. We’re sure they will go with a bang though!

Venom Prison are completely new on us. Their debut album promo just arrived at CB HQ however and it’s an absolute belter. Ones to watch, for sure!

One month away folks… one month away!!!
